John Frederick was the son of John and Ellen Kelly they were an Appledore Family

The 1911 census shows them living at 'Gabriel House' Grenville Terrace Northam.

The circumstances surrounding the sinking, and subsequent actions of the SM U.86  Commander saw him and two Lieutenants Charged with war crimes after the war. He sought to destroy the evidence of torpedoing the ship by running down the lifeboats and machine gunning the survivors. 234 lives were lost with only twenty four survivors      The u boat Captain escaped justice, he left the country and avoided extradition.
