Frederick was born at St Giles Near Torrington and the family moved to Northam around 1893.  It looks as though he joined the army before the 1911 census as he is recorded at Saint Georges Barracks Malta at this time.  

Frederick was the the second son, and one of 10 children of Frederick  and Elizabeth Sussex of Cross Street Northam.  Frederick senior was listed as a shoemaker in 1911 Census. He applied for a clasp in respect of the services of his son on 8.12.19.
